A day in the life of economics....we have been working hard learning about economic systems. We simulated a market economy, households and firms, to physically see the exchanges that happen in a true market economy. It was a competitive atmosphere to see how many "goods" (starbursts) our households could buy, and how much profit ($$$) our businesses could make. Highest profit went to Hailey H. and most goods in the household went to Elki J!
We all took part in working at a math factory today in economics. We were able to simulate the idea of "the law of diminishing returns" when one employee, becomes "one too many" for a business to operate and see an increase in returns. Good job! It was fun to see everyone "crammed" together in tiny desks!
Our big day in Accounting this semester was November 20th; we traveled to KPMG in Minneapolis to meet our ementors. What an experience! KPMG's offices are located on the 42nd floor of the Wells Fargo center building in downtown Minneapolis. Our conference room had a wall of windows looking out of the skyline. We could see all the way to St. Paul and further. KPMG has over 23,000 employees....they are more than just a public accounting firm. They offer many job opportunities to people with a variety of experience and education. After meeting our mentors we sat is small groups and had lunch together. During lunch each group had "conversation starters" to use to get the conversation going. Most groups didn't need the help :) The conversations happening were great! After lunch each group was given a short activity to do together regarding desired career attributes. This was a great opportunity for our mentors to tell students what the working life was really like. We have 3 weeks left of communicating with our mentors. We've had an enlightening experience with KPMG and hope to continue utilizing the ementor program! More pictures to come!
My goal this year is to recognize students who show characteristics and habits that are desired by employers. We talk about soft skills, social skills, academic skills, technical skills, etc. They are all important. My goal is to remind students that hard work, effort, punctuality, meeting deadlines, being a team player, etc are important. If you can show an employer you have these skills, you can learn to do many jobs. There are occasions where employers might hire a little less experience if they feel a person has the skills to lead, be part of a team, be "molded", and contribute in a positive way. So a big THANK YOU goes out to: Dylan, Taylor, Kyle, Matt, Miranda, and Katie. Nice job!
Hi! My goal, along with my computer application students, is to create a blog this year and choose something to blog about. My goal is to blog at least every other week about interesting things we are doing in my classes. So first, here is a little bit about me......I'm not originally from Central Minnesota. I grew up near St. Paul and chose to go to college at SCSU. That is what brought me here. After I graduated with my B.S. in Business Management, I tried moving back to the Twin Cities but it wasn't for me. I was lucky to get my first "real" job at Knife River (at the time Bauerly Companies). I was at Knife River for 7 years working with leadership development and training. I attended the U of M to complete my M.Ed in Business and Marketing and got my first teaching job at Buffalo High School. Since then I have taught at St. Cloud Technical High School, Kimball High School, and finally I'm here at Foley High School.
